MÁS SOBRE LA MASTER CLASS

It was by  Petras‘s initiative that Photography Department was established at Justinas Vienožinskis arts faculty, where he became head of department. „Photography“ study program was accredited to the maximal 6 years and it was evaluated by the experts as an example of exceptional quality and  unique study possibility at international level. In 2016 already a second graduation ceremony took place, most of the 18 graduates of the programme are successfully working in the chosen specialty.

Later in 2015 Petras Saulenas opened a photography gallery „Bright&Showy“ that exhibits famous Lithuanian and foreign artist works as well as selected student works. “Bright & Showy“ is still a young gallery, but already well known by professionals and those interested in photography. One of the key objectives of the gallery is to create a dialogue between the guest artist and the audience, therefore exhibiting artists personally participate in the openings and host lectures, seminars etc. In September 2016 Petras Saulenas curated and created works for and exhibition which documents up each single exhibition that took place within the first year since opening of the gallery.

The most recent and significant activity initiated by Petras Saulenas is a movement „Photography School“ which unites photography artists, still studying at or already graduated from the Photography Department as well as lecturers and other photo artists who have common aesthetically and idealogical understanding. Those students who are selected to the “Photography School“ are pushed to create series of work, to think conceptually and realise it in their works, to present their own and their colleagues works and also write artist statements about them, to create portfolios of international level, to write, to learn about the history and practices of conceptual art.  Therefore creative works of the authors from the group are all well thought out, made to visualise series of  thematic series of art photography that are realised at a high technical level .

Postcard’ project: Individually perceiving and interpreting spatial articulation, Petras Saulėnas involves himself to the city’s, as a messages, reading discourse. City is sensibly defined by combining sometimes spatially quite distant objects, broken up time moments, caught by using his handmade wooden pinhole camera. Images of the urban locations chaotically lay on a negative sheet film creating new connections, while ignoring trajectories implied by time and space. Without flash and focus, tamed and immortalised by light objects become one structure, which traces authors road of searches. The image, which appear on the postcard, is not documentary mirroring of reality any more. Although, the usage of this particular pinhole photography technique creates an illusion of direct perception constructing city, which is real, recognisable  there also appears another city – not seen, not experienced.

A postcard like that brakes free from consumerism – overcomes established postcard‘s, as a graphical cliche’s, stereotype. The postcard creates unique interpretation of spatial articulation by exposing captured intense personal  experiences. Both the format and technique creates an intimate relationship between the image and the spectator, between the author and his piece. Primarily by using light image is captured on 13×18 negative film sheet coated with halide grains and protective colloid mixture, later silver gelatine contact print is created, what requires time and accuracy.  The process itself also becomes an indication to an attention and intimate relation with the recipient of the postcard.

“After the master class I would like to invite students to participate in my art project associated with students as a group of people. This project involves specially made pinhole camera and photographic film as a media. The idea involving pinhole camera and a group of students was born during my first Erasmus visit. This project started during one of the first Erasmus projects. At the time we were analysing the pinhole camera, learning about its construction, different possibilities to use it in creative works, about ideas that demand exceptionally the use such camera. However, this idea started as a coincidence, because on that day I was giving a lecture about pinhole cameras and showed my self made pinhole camera, that I used for a different project called “Postcard“. This pinhole camera is made to fit a 13×18 cm/5x7“ sheet film and has 40 pinholes. The idea of this group project is that every student that takes part in the lecture is different and unique. Each participant chooses a pinhole in the camera that occupies a particular place on the light sensitive material. As a result, the objects on one light sensitive material overlap, some blur, cover each other, others are highlighted. This applies to and represents people working in a group as well. The picture commemorates all of us being in the same place, at the same time together. This photograph becomes a remembrance made by light. Every student gets his own hand made silver gelatine print. The photograph is of limited edition – the number of participants determines how many copies are produced.”
